Henry Colburn, 1843. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo, Lxiii, 335pp, 432pp, xlvi, 330pp. 3 uniformly bound 3/4 bright-green straight-grained morocco fine bindings. Spines with 6 compartments with gilt rule decoration, titles, volume indication and the printing date of 1843 at the foot of the spines. Marbled boards, top edges gilt, other edges deckled. Silken bound-in bookmarks. Each volume with book plates from 'The Library at Carolands' the library of the Pullman family who gained their substantial wealth from developing railway cars around the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The Caroland estate remains one of the most significant homes of the Gilded Age era and is located south of San Francisco. Agnes Strickland is mostly noted for her history of the Queens of England. This particular work is usually found without the supplemental 3rd volume. A scarce set. These bindings, though clearly coming from a very high end workshop around the early 1900's are not bearing a binder's signature. Very Good. Item #13573
